What is Mullein?

Let’s start with the history before we jump into the science and wonder of our organic Mullein Leaf Tea. Native to Europe, northern Africa, and Asia, and established in the United States in the early 18th century, verbascum thapsus, or mullein, is a common biennial plant with furry leaves and small, yellow flowers that grows up to 8 feet tall. Mullein plants love the light. Though its habitat is typically an unruly and previously disturbed one, usually destroyed by natural disasters of some sort, Mullein spread very easily and widely. Close to 2,000 years ago, the ancient Greek physician, pharmacologist, botanist, and author Dioscorides was the first to recommend using the mullein plant when seeking healing from multiple issues surrounding breathing capabilities. Many years later, the Zuni people processed mullein into a powder that they then used as a poultice for skin issues. On another level, folk medicine espouses that mullein boasts magic, able to provide its user courage, protection, and the ability to attract love. Whether this is the case or not, with so much amazing magic behind it, we’ll choose to go with it!

Flavor Profile

Mullein has a lovely sweet, slightly herbal flavor. It’s a tea that’s easy to drink, with or without your favorite sweetener. If you’re like most people and like a little honey in your tea, we recommend you try our Buddha Teas Clover Honey with our Mullein. It’s pairs beautifully. And speaking of pairing, Mullein is one of the more versatile when it comes to pairing with other teas. We love the flavor and most importantly the health benefits of pairing this with Echinacea Elderberry Blend. It’s that all around immunity boost that we all could use this season.

The Science Behind Mullein

The science behind mullein tells us that the reason this herb is so helpful in assisting us with easier breathing is that the plant is astringent and helps to expel unwanted particles when we exhale. Today, Mullein Leaf Tea is sought out for many reasons, but mainly for those seeking easy breathing. This tea is a true partner for the body and one of its most vital functions. Mullein is also full of essential electrolytes such as potassium and boasts a plethora of minerals such as calcium and magnesium. The magnesium, as we all know is a natural mineral that helps put your body into a relaxing state thus helping you get a great night’s rest. It’s also incredibly rich with Vitamin C and EVERYONE can use a good daily dose of that. All in all, the tea is a smart move if you’re feeling under the weather or if you simply feel like you want to relax and take a deeper breath!

Bleach-Free Tea Bags: Our tea bags may not be the whitest, but they ARE the safest because Buddha Teas ONLY uses bleach-free teas bags. For us, this is not a preference but a necessity. Tea bags that have been bleached contain harmful chemicals such as dioxin and epichlorohydrin. Dioxin is a highly toxic, chemical compound produced by some chemical processes such as bleaching paper. It falls into the category of a POP (persistent organic pollutant) which, as the name suggests, persists and refuses to breakdown in our bodies and the environment, potentially taking decades to detox. Epichlorohydrin (bleach) is also toxic and listed as a hazardous air pollutant (HAP). It has been classified by the EPA as a human carcinogen.

We believe that our customers should never have to choose between their health and their senses so we proudly offer bleach-free tea bags so that they can taste the purity of natural teas without the cost of harmful chemicals or additives.
